For the lawyer

Draft written 2026-10-24 by Claude (an AI assistant, not a lawyer) from the product's actual behavior, for a lawyer to check before it is published or put in the installer. Bracketed items are facts only the owner can fill in. Open points are listed at the end. The installer's eula.en.txt and eula.bn.txt must carry the same text once it is final.

This agreement is between you and [legal name of the operator] ("we", "us"), the maker of Likhon. It covers the Likhon app for Windows (likhon.exe, in its Portable and installed forms), its text service (likhon_tsf.dll), the installer, updates to any of these, and items you add to the app from the Likhon library. By installing, copying or using Likhon you accept this agreement. If you do not accept it, do not install or use Likhon.

1. Your license

We give you a free, worldwide, non-exclusive license to:

  • install and use Likhon on any number of computers, at home, at work, in schools or anywhere else;
  • copy likhon.exe and use the copy as the Portable edition, for example from a USB drive; and
  • give unchanged copies of the Portable or installer download to others, free of charge, as long as this agreement and the open-source notices stay with them.

You may not sell Likhon, charge for copies of it, or pass off a changed copy as Likhon. Likhon is free: there is no paid edition, and nothing in the app is locked behind a payment.

Likhon's own code is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (see Software licensing terms). That license also applies, and where it gives you more rights than this agreement, its terms win.

2. Parts made by others

Likhon includes software, data and fonts made by others, such as files from Avro Keyboard under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, the Hind Siliguri font under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and Rust libraries mostly under the MIT license. Each of these parts is licensed to you under its own license, not under this agreement, and nothing here limits the rights those licenses give you. The full list and texts are in the app (Settings > About > Open-source credits), on Open-source licenses and credits, and in License notices.

Items you add from the Likhon library (layouts, themes, word lists, fonts and others) are made by their uploaders and come under the license shown on each item's page.

3. What Likhon does on your computer

So that you know what you are agreeing to:

  • Typing. To turn your keystrokes into Bangla, Likhon reads them while it is switched on, either through a keyboard hook (Portable) or as a Windows text service (installed with the keyboard-list option). What you type is processed on your computer only. It is never sent anywhere and never written to a log.
  • Learning words. Likhon can remember words you type so it can suggest them later. They are kept in a file on your computer. It never learns from fields that Windows reports as password fields, and you can see, export, change or delete these words in Settings.
  • Where it writes. The Portable edition keeps its files in a folder beside likhon.exe (or in your user profile if that folder is read-only) and does not write to the Windows registry. The installer adds only what you choose on its feature page: the text service and its registration, a Start with Windows entry, file associations, fonts, shortcuts and its uninstall entry.
  • Default Bangla font changer. This optional tool changes a Windows setting that decides which font shows Bangla text. It needs administrator permission, saves a backup first and can restore it. Some apps ignore the setting.
  • The internet. Likhon connects to the internet only when you ask it to: to check for updates, download from the library, donate words, or send a report. There is no telemetry and no background connection. What these requests send is described in the Privacy notice.

4. Updates

Likhon never updates itself silently. When you check for updates and choose to install one, Likhon downloads the new version, checks its signature and replaces itself. Library items are checked against our signature before they are added, and Likhon reads our signed list of withdrawn items when you check for updates. Updates are covered by this agreement unless they come with a new one.

5. Restrictions

You may not:

  • remove or change the copyright, license or attribution notices in Likhon;
  • use Likhon's name or logo for a changed version, or in a way that suggests we made or endorse something we did not;
  • use Likhon to break the law, or to read or record other people's typing without their knowledge; or
  • get around the signature checks so that the app installs packages or updates as if we had signed them.

These limits do not take away any right you have under an open-source license for a part of Likhon, or under the law of your country.

6. No warranty

Likhon is free and is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we give no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy (for example of spelling suggestions, autocorrect or legacy-encoding conversion), or non-infringement. Keep copies of important documents: check converted text before you rely on it.

7. Limit of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits or business, arising from Likhon or this agreement, even if we were told it might happen. Where we are liable despite this, our total liability is limited to [amount, for example BDT 1,000], because Likhon is given to you free of charge. Nothing in this agreement limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

8. Ending this agreement

You can end this agreement at any time by deleting every copy of Likhon you have (the installer's uninstaller removes what it added; for Portable, delete its folder). If you break this agreement, your license under it ends automatically. Sections 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 continue after it ends.

9. General

  • Law and courts. This agreement is governed by the laws of [Bangladesh]. The courts of [Dhaka] have jurisdiction, but this does not take away the protection of the consumer laws of the country where you live.
  • Changes. We may update this agreement for new versions of Likhon. The version that comes with a release applies to that release. The date at the top shows the last change.
  • Language. This agreement is written in English and Bangla. If the two differ, [the English version] applies.
  • Whole agreement. This agreement, the licenses of the parts in section 2, and the Privacy notice are the whole agreement about the app. If a part of it cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • Contact. [legal@likhon.app — address to be created], [postal address].

For the lawyer

Open points for the owner and lawyer:

  1. The operator's legal name and address (Likhon belongs to Agniflux under a partnership; Muktokolpo uses it under a separate agreement, which this text does not cover).
  2. Whether free redistribution of unchanged copies (section 1) is wanted. It matches how Portable is meant to be shared, but it is the owner's decision.
  3. Likhon's own license is now MPL-2.0 (owner, 2026-10-24: Software licensing terms), which allows selling copies. Section 1 must be reconciled with it. As it is an open-source license, sections 1 and 5 shrink to a pointer to it, and the warranty and liability sections usually come from it.
  4. Governing law, courts, liability cap and the controlling language, and whether Bangladesh consumer law (Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009) limits sections 6 and 7 for free software.
  5. Whether the installer must show a separate consent for the keyboard hook or text service (section 3).
